Crowns
Dental crowns are a popular dental restoration option for patients with damaged, decayed, or weakened teeth. Crowns are custom-made caps that are placed over the existing tooth, providing a strong and natural-looking solution for a variety of dental issues.
Benefits of Crowns
- Restores the function of damaged or decayed teeth
- Improves the appearance of the tooth by covering stains or discoloration
- Provides additional strength to a weakened tooth
- Helps to prevent further damage or decay to the tooth
Types of Crowns
There are several types of crowns available, including:
Porcelain Crowns
These provide the most natural-looking option, as they can be matched to the color of your surrounding teeth.
Ceramic Crowns
These are similar to porcelain crowns, but are more durable and resistant to wear.
Metal Crowns
These are often used for back teeth, as they are extremely strong and durable.
Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal Crowns
These provide the durability of metal crowns with the natural-looking appearance of porcelain.
The Crown Procedure
The process of getting a crown typically requires two dental appointments. During the first appointment, the damaged or decayed tooth is prepared and a mold is taken of the tooth. This mold is sent to a dental laboratory, where the crown is custom-made to fit your tooth precisely. In the meantime, a temporary crown is placed over the tooth to protect it. During the second appointment, the temporary crown is removed and the custom-made crown is placed over the tooth and cemented into place.
Aftercare
Crowns require regular dental care to maintain their appearance and function. It’s important to practice good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly, and to schedule regular dental cleanings and checkups.
